Tata Motors is the largest automotive manufacturer in India and is part of the Tata Group.

In 1945 Tata Engineering and Locomotive Co. Ltd.  Was founded, which mainly produced locomotives. In cooperation with the British company Marshall, Sons & Co. three years later the first road roller was finished. On the basis of a cooperation with Daimler-Benz AG, the first commercial vehicle of the company was released in 1954.

In 1966, the company's Engineering Research Center was founded, which was to focus on the research and development of automobiles. In 1971 the first engines with direct injection were manufactured. The production of heavy commercial vehicles began in 1983.

In 2003, the company had produced over three million vehicles. In September 2004, the company moved to the New York Stock Exchange, making it the first Indian company listed there. In the same year, Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company, Korea's second-largest truck producer, was bought. This resulted in Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, the world's sixth-largest truck manufacturer.
