UD Trucks, formerly UD Nissan Diesel, is a Japanese manufacturer of diesel trucks and buses.
In 1935, Nippon Diesel Engineering Co. Ltd. was established, which initially built trucks with two-stroke diesel engines according to the Krupp Junkers license.
In 1950, the company changed its name to Minsei Diesel Industries Ltd. and finally, 1960 in Nissan Diesel Motor Co. Ltd. Outside Japan, the trucks are partly offered as Nissan-UD (UD: Uniflow-scavenged Diesel or Ultimate Dependability). 1973 began the manufacture of vans for Nissan engine.
In 2006, Volvo initially acquired a 13% stake in Nissan Diesel, previously owned by Nissan Motor. Following the acquisition of another 6% in 2006, Volvo made a takeover offer to the shareholders of Nissan Diesel in March 2007 and was able to acquire a further 77% of the company's shares for SEK 7.4 billion. Since then, UD Nissan Diesel has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Volvo Group.
Today, the company is specialized in the manufacturing of diesel engines, light, medium, heavy duty diesel trucks, and special-purpose vehicles.
