The Canter is a medium-duty commercial vehicle from FUSO. Initially, the model was only available in Japan and some other Asian countries, but form the late 1980s, it also started to be sold in the USA. The urban truck models can be identified either by their FUSO Canter lettering at the front or by the Mitsubishi logo which tends to be fitted at the rear.
Since 2004, the FUSO brand became an indispensable part of Daimler Truck AG. With a stake of 89.3 %, Daimler Truck AG is the leading shareholder alongside Mitsubishi Corporation.
Established in 1932 in Japan, the FUSO brand is today one of the biggest commercial vehicle manufacturers in Asia with dealerships in more than 170 countries on five continents and a product portfolio for all fields of operation. Accordingly, FUSO is not just known in Japan, but is also a familiar name in the worldwide commercial vehicle industry.
The first Canter rolled off the production line in 1963, signalling the start of a unique vehicle history. Between its launch and the present day, more than four million vehicles have been produced, with one overarching aim: making transport on the world's continents more efficient and economical.
FUSO is present in over 30 European countries with the Canter in the 3.5 t to 8.55 t sector. The Sales and Aftersales departments are headquartered in Stuttgart. Across Europe, over 800 service centres ensure that customers can stay on the road at all times.
The FUSO assembly plant in Tramagal (Portugal) only supplies FUSO Canter vehicles for the European market. In Asia alone, an annual run of around 140,000 units of the Canter are produced and sold worldwide. More than half of the installed parts and components of a Canter are manufactured in Europe. The vehicles are available with either a single cab or a crewcab.
FUSO trucks are available either in the form of the Canter or the fully electric eCanter which was launched in 2017.
In the Canter model series, the choice is immense: five different weight classes (3.5 t, 6.0 t, 6.5 t, 7.49 t and 8.55 t), three cab variants (standard, comfort or crewcab), six wheelbases (2500 mm, 2800 mm, 3400 mm, 3850 mm, 4300 mm, 4750 mm) and three engines (135 hp, 150 hp, 175 hp). All three engine variants for the Canter, of course, also comply with the Euro VI emissions standard and are exceptionally economical in operation.
With a robust ladder-type frame for a variety of body solutions and high payload, the vehicle is always ready for action: be it in public service operations or in gardening and landscaping businesses.
The Canter – ready whenever you need it. Put it to the test
The Canter is a true powerhouse which will relieve you in all situations. The Canter 8.55 t can master any task imaginable, and the 7.49 t is hot on its heels with a chassis load capacity of 5 t. And both are also especially light and manoeuvrable.
The low entry makes regular entering and exiting the vehicle more comfortable, while the new, standard DUONIC® 2.0 dual-clutch transmission enables rapid shifting without power loss and the numerous body variants give drivers greater flexibility. And if a chassis load capacity of up to 6 t isn't enough, you can make use of the Canter's maximum towing capacity of 3.5 t.
In the trades, the Canter 3.5 t is precisely the right companion. With the smallest turning circle in its class, it will bring you to even the tightest of places. But that doesn't mean that you have to forego ride comfort: both the 1.70 m cab and the 2 m variant are particularly spacious, plus the independent wheel suspension makes for a simultaneously pleasant and dynamic driving experience in a vehicle which is as easy to drive as a passenger car. With the longest body length in the entire segment, the Canter 3.5 t also offers you numerous options when it comes to choosing bodies.
Snow and ice? Tricky terrain? No problem – with its excellent traction and additionally engageable all-wheel drive, the Canter 4×4 keeps its feet firmly on the ground, regardless of whether working in winter service operations, in the town or on very steep roads. The operating costs mean you can keep your own feet on the ground too: with the highly efficient 3.0-litre engine, the Canter 6.5 t drives especially economically whilst also fulfilling the Euro VI emissions norm.
Be it in municipal operations, on small construction sites, in landscaping and gardening, or even in short-radius distribution – every FUSO Canter is a master in its field of work. Manoeuvrable about town, it is a resilient and flexible all-rounder. Each and every FUSO Canter is tailored to meet the daily challenges of working in the urban environment: deliveries in the tight streets of the historical old town, several tonnes of furniture for a house move or working on the often tricky terrain of a building site. Together they form an unbeatable specialist unit. For greater efficiency, versatility and performance, wherever the job takes you and whatever the season.
The FUSO eCanter is one of the first fully-electric trucks to be manufactured in small-series production and was developed specifically with inner-city, last-mile distribution in mind. Thanks to all the experience gained over decades in the development of low-emission drive systems, the FUSO headquarters in Kawasaki, Japan are also the global development centre for hybrid drive technology. The drivetrain of the electric truck is equipped with six lithium-ion high-voltage battery packs with 420 V and 13.8 kWh each. The eCanter has a permissible gross weight of 7.49 tonnes and is thus classed as a light truck. It can transport payloads of up to 4.5 tonnes. The vehicle model is based on the FUSO Canter, whose pre-series production started in 2017. In 2019, series-production began. The eCanter is thus the first fully-electric light-duty truck from Daimler Trucks which was designed for emission-free and noiseless short-radius distribution in inner cities. According to information from the manufacturer, the range of the eCanter is approx. 100 km. To date, the eCanter has covered more than 3 million locally emission-free kilometres.
